History and origin of coffee
Coffee is an integral part of the daily lives of many people around the world. Let's learn about the history and origin of this drink:
History of coffee in the world:
Origin: The coffee tree originated in tropical Africa and the regions of Madagascar, Comoros, Mauritius and Reunion in the Indian Ocean. Initially, coffee trees were only grown in the African and Arab regions.
Discovery: In 1671, goat herders in Kaffa (present-day Ethiopia) discovered that goats after eating a plant with white, red-fruited flowers ran and jumped until night without getting tired. The monk at the nearby monastery verified by drinking the juice from the exotic fruit and coffee was discovered.
Spillover: Coffee spread around the world as missionaries, traders, travelers carried coffee beans everywhere. In just 100 years, many new types of coffee appeared and it became the most popular commodity.
Exports: By the 18th century, coffee had become the most profitable export crop in the world.
History of coffee in Vietnam:
The French introduced coffee to Vietnam around 1850. In early 1900, coffee was grown in some northern provinces such as Tuyen Quang, Lang Son and Ninh Binh.
Central Highlands: Later, coffee was grown in the Central Highlands area today. Initially, the coffee plant variety grown in the Central Highlands was Tea coffee (or Arabica coffee), but later replaced with Voi coffee (or Robusta coffee) and jackfruit coffee.
Export: Vietnam has become the leading coffee exporter in Southeast Asia and the second largest producer and exporter of green coffee in the world after Brazil.
Coffee is not only a beverage, but also part of human history and culture.
